You’ll fall in love with North East Wales, the area is awash with dreamy walks for those most amorous occasions.
Adventure seekers have miles of breath taking routes to explore right from our doorstep at the foothills of the Berwyn Mountains or culture lovers can immerse themselves in the region’s rich history and explore one of the many hidden castles, roam fairy tale landscapes or visit magnificent stately homes.
Here are The West Arms’ top romantic places to walk if you book a romantic break in North East Wales, just a short drive from our country inn in the peaceful village of Llanarmon DC.
Take a walk amongst stately gardens
Explore North Wales’ history and take a trip to Erddig. This stunning stately home has plenty of stories to tell year round. Roam the romantic park and gardens and walk in the footsteps of the local couple Lucy Hitchman and Ernest Jones, who worked there just before the First World War. It is a tale of ‘life below the stairs’. The one-mile romantic walk retraces the route where they fell in love.
Visit the Stream in the Sky
Spend the most romantic day of the year walking along an 11 mile World Heritage Site canal. The Llangollen Canal spans across 3 counties and 2 countries with the highlight of the walk being the crossing of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (or the Stream in the Sky). Take in those spectacular 360 views of the Dee Valley. This much loved attraction remains a popular spot for proposals, just saying!
Chase a magic waterfall
The Pistyll Rhaeadr – often referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of Wales – offers a 3-mile circuit crossing the foot of the fall and returning to the car park via old quarry heaps and hillsides. If your feeling braver you can climb to the right of the waterfall which takes you uphill, along the great cliffs of the Berwyn ridge. Top off the afternoon with a calming tea beside the falls at the little Café to celebrate your mini waterfall adventure.
Visit a medieval Castle
A trip to Castell Dinas Brân can only be described as something out of a fairy tale. The ruins of this old stone castle are set atop a hill within the Dee Valley overlooking Llangollen. Its central location in this mountainous range makes it the perfect romantic spot with 360 views of the Dee Valley…so take a deep breath and appreciate each other and of course the awe inspiring landscape of North Wales.
